Alexis Thompson Accepts Safeway Classic Exemption.
16 Year-Old Phenom to Play in 40th Anniversary Event.
The Safeway Classic announced that Alexis “Lexi” Thompson has accepted a sponsor’s exemption for the LPGA event to be held August 15-21 at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club.
Thompson, of Coral Springs, FL, turned pro last June at age 15, was tied for the lead going into the final round of the LPGA Avnet Classic last month, finishing tied for 19th. In 2010 Thompson finished tied for 10th at the U.S. Women’s Open and had her best finish of the year two weeks later, tying for second at the Evian Masters.
“We are pleased to have Lexi participate in our event this year,” said Tom Maletis, President of Tournament Golf Foundation, the Safeway Classic owners and organizers. “Her performance since turning pro has been sensational and her amateur career was distinguished as well. It will be a great treat for LPGA fans in Portland to see her.”
